Comhghairdeas! Discover Science and Maths Award 2018

We have received our Plaque of STEM Excellence Award for the 2017/2018 academic year from Science Foundation Ireland.  Our plaque will arrive in June.  The following is the feedback we received on our Log of Evidence:

Congratulations – all your hard work has paid off! Kilglass National School has achieved a Science Foundation Ireland Discover Science and Maths Plaque of STEM Excellence for the 2017/18 academic year.  It is fantastic to see all of the science, technology, engineering and maths work being carried out in Kilglass National School with such enthusiasm.  Thank you for your efforts and we hope that […] the children enjoyed taking part in the Awards programme this year.  Again many congratulations to Kilglass National School on achieving your Science Foundation Ireland Discover Science & Maths Award”.

During the year the children from Junior Infants to Sixth Class have been busy completing some incredible science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) work in class and further afield.  We have participated in Science Week, Engineers Week, Scratch programming, Izak 9 problem solving and maths trails around the school.  We have been carrying out hands on investigations, doing experiments and completing design and make activities.  PowerPoints have been created, science information has been researched using ICT; we used maths to record and analyse science investigation results and the children helped upload images on our STEM video and  our new website.  The children have attended workshops with Scientific Sue in Sligo IT, gone on a Seashore Safari with the Marine Institute, have enjoyed workshops with Martina Butler in school, with Daithi Lavelle in school and in Kilglass House and we have visited our local landfill with an environmental engineer.  We held our fantastic STEM Showcase which was a resounding success.  Please find attached our Digital Log of Evidence which we have compiled to give a flavour of all the STEM work taking place in the school and which was submitted in our bid to receive a Science Foundation Ireland Discover Science and Maths Award 2018.
