In September the boys and girls in Rang a Cúig agus a Sé took part in a science project with University College Dublin. They collected soil samples from the hedgerows around the school using specialist sample bags and instructions to ensure our samples were uncontaminated. The scientists in UCD got in contact with us this week to inform us that they discovered a species of yeast from our school that has only ever been identified once before in a soil sample located in the Netherlands. The species of yeast is called Ogataea degrootiae. The scientists are planning to sequence the genome of our isolate, and if they are successful, it will be the first time that any isolate from this species has been sequenced – and only two have ever been identified!
